Circle of Iron .. .. the divine Flautist !! - Murali Kannan thirukolam

Circle of Iron is a 1978 martial arts fantasy film co-written by Bruce Lee, who intended to star in the film himself, but died before production. After Lee's death in 1973, Silliphant and Stanley Mann completed the screenplay, and Lee's part was given to Kung Fu television star David Carradine.

மனித மனதை ஆற்றுப்படுத்தும் கலைகளில் முக்கியமானது, இசை. இயன்ற போதெல்லாம் வரம்பின்றி கேட்டு ரசிக்கலாம். இசைக்கு இன்றியமையாதவை கருவிகள். மயங்க வைக்கும் காற்றிசைக் கருவிகளில் ஒன்று புல்லாங்குழல்.  காற்று இசைக்கருவி வகையைச் சேர்ந்தது புல்லாங்குழல். துளை வழியே காற்றை ஊதி இசையை உருவாக்குவதால், துளைக்கருவி எனவும் அழைப்பர். ஸ்வரங்களை அடிப்படையாக கொண்ட துளைகளை மூடித் திறக்கும் திறனுக்கு ஏற்ப, ஒலிக்கோர்வையை வித்தியாசமாக உருவாக்கலாம். இந்தியாவில், இரண்டு வகை புல்லாங்குழல்கள் உள்ளன. பன்சூரி என்ற வகையில், காற்று ஊதும் முத்திரை துளை ஒன்றும், ஸ்வரங்களுக்காக விரல் துளைகள் ஆறும் இருக்கும். இது, இந்துஸ்தானி இசையில் அதிகம் பயன்படுகிறது. மற்றொருவகை வேணு இவை தென்னிந்திய கர்நாடக இசையில்  பயன்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன. இவற்றில் எட்டு விரல் துளைகளும் ஒரு ஆற்றுவாய் துளையும் இருக்கும்.தற்போது தென்னிந்திய புல்லாங்குழலாக கருதப்படுவது 20-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் சரப சாஸ்திரி என்பவரால் வடிவமைக்கப்பட்ட ஏழு விரல்துளைகள் கொண்ட புல்லாங்குழல் ஆகும். புல் இன தாவரமான மூங்கில் மரத்தில் செய்யப்படுவதால், புல்லாங்குழல் என பெயர் பெற்றது. இளமையும், மூப்புமின்றி, நடுவயதுள்ள மூங்கிலை வெட்டி, ஓராண்டு நிழலில் உலர்த்தி பதப்படுத்தி புல்லாங்குழல் தயாரிப்பர். சீரான விட்டமுள்ள ஒடுங்கிய குழாய் தான் இசை எழுப்ப பயன்படும். வாயால் ஊதும் துளையை, முத்திரை என்பர். அதை, ஆற்றுவாய் என்பதும் உண்டு.

Of the many instruments associated with  Carnatic music-  Flute is divine. A melodic instrument for the most part, the flute has a clear and bright sound with a distinctive warmth, refinement, and subtlety to its tone.  .. ..in Western world there is another close relative – it is not unusual for a performer who plays the flute to switch to the piccolo, alto flute, or bass flute. The piccolo is pitched an octave higher than the flute and produces a shrill, high-pitched sound. With a length of 30 cm, the piccolo resounds loudly in the performer's right ear when the instrument is played. The alto flute has a slightly gentler sound, while the bass flute boasts a total tube length of around 130 cm and is pitched an octave below the flute.

We have seen and heard many flautists in Carnatic music.   Palladam Sanjeeva Rao was the   flautist who  in very early days, gave the Carnatic flute its stature as a concert worthy instrument.  Tiruvidaimarudur Ramaswamy Mahalingam   affectionately known as Mali, was a flautist who revolutionised the style of flute-playing in Carnatic music. In Northern India, the name readily comes to mind is Pundit Hariprasad Chaurasia.  Recently heard another - Paras Nath, another flautist hailing from a well-known family of musicians from Varanasi who have traditionally been in this world for two and a half centuries.

The greatest of em’ all is of course the divine Flautist Lord Krishna – who mesmerized everyone as He grew up in Gokul. 

திருவல்லிக்கேணி தவன  உத்சவத்தில் மூன்றாம் (கடைசி) நாள் 20.3.2025 மாலை ஸ்ரீஅழகிய சிங்கப்பெருமாள்   "முரளிக்கண்ணன்" திருக்கோலத்தில் புறப்பாடு கண்டருளினார்.  மாயக்கண்ணன்  குழலூதி வந்தால், லோகமனைத்தும் மயங்கும்.  இன்று  தெள்ளியசிங்கனை  தரிசனம் செய்தோர்கள்  அவன்  வடிவழகில் மயங்கி, பக்தி பரவசத்தால் கண்ணீர் மல்க அவனையே நினைத்து, அவனையே வேண்டி ஆனந்தம் அடைந்தார்கள்.

 

கண்ணபிரான்  ஊதின குழலினோசை செவியில் விழப்பெற்ற கந்தருவர்கள்  - பரமபோக்யமான இக்குழலோசையாகிற வலையிலே  கட்டுப்பட்டு, “இனிப் பாட்டுத் தொழிலாகிற பெருஞ்சுமையில் நமக்கு யாதொரு அந்வயமுமில்லை” என்று நிச்சயித்தொழிந்ததுமன்றி, கீழுள்ள காலமெல்லாம் தாம் பாடித் திரிந்தபடியை நினைத்து இவ்வளவு நாட்காளாக இதை கேட்காமல் இருந்தோமே என வருந்தினராம் என்கிறார் நம் பெரியாழ்வார் தமது 'பெரியாழ்வார் திருமொழி பாசுரத்தில்"

நம்பரமன்  இந்நாள்  குழலூதக் கேட்டவர்கள்  இடருற்றன கேளீர்

அம்பரம் திரியும் காந்தப்பரெல்லாம் அமுத கீதவலையால்  சுருக்குண்டு

நம்பரமன்றென்று நாணி மயங்கி நைந்து சோர்ந்து கைம்மறித்து  நின்றனரே. 

சிவந்து மிகவும் பெரிய திருக்கண்களையுடையனாய், பருத்த தோள்களையுடையனாய்,  தேவகியின் பிள்ளையாய், தேவசிம்ஹமாய், நமக்கு ஸ்வாமியான பரமபுருஷனாயிராநின்ற கண்ணபிரான்- இன்றைய தினம்  வேய்ங்குழலை ஊத - அத்தகைய அற்புத இன்னிசையைக்  கேட்டவர்கள், அவஸ்தைப்பட்ட வகைகளை, சொல்லுகிறேன்  கேளுங்கள் ! - அவ்விடர்  யாதெனில் ஆகாசத்திலே திரியும் காந்தருவர் அனைவரும் அமுதம் போல் இனிதான குழலிசையாகிற வலையிலே அகப்பட்டு  பாடுகையாகிற சுமை இனி நம்முடையதன்றென்று அறுதியிட்டு, முன்பெல்லாம் பாடித்திரிந்ததற்கும் வெட்கப்பட்டு, அறிவழிந்து மனம் சிதிலமாகப் பெற்று, சோர்ந்து, சரீரமுங் கட்டுக்குலையப் பெற்று கைமறித்து நின்றனர்; இனி நாம் ஒருவகைக் கைத்தொழிலுக்குங் கடவோமல்லோம் என்று கையை மடக்கிக் கொண்டு நின்றார்கள் என்று பகிர்கிறார் பெரியாழ்வார் இந்த பாசுரத்தில்.

Circle of Iron referred at the start  is a 1978 martial arts fantasy film co-written by Bruce Lee, who intended to star in the film himself, but died before production. The film is also known as The Silent Flute, which was the original title of the story conceived by Lee, James Coburn and Stirling Silliphant in 1969. After Lee's death in 1973, Silliphant and Stanley Mann completed the screenplay, and Lee's part was given to Kung Fu television star David Carradine.  In the 1960s, Bruce Lee was working on  The Silent Flute, but the project was never finished in his lifetime.

               Their script centered on a young martial artist named Cord, whose main objective was to find a book that would supposedly unlock the path to true enlightenment. Bruce Lee expected to have a starring role in The Silent Flute, but he had no intention of playing the main protagonist, who was supposed to be a white character. Instead, Lee was to play various martial artists who would encounter Cord and teach him kung fu and other valuable lessons along the way.   Once they had a script ready, scouting out locations for filming was unfortunately the furthest Lee, Coburn, and Silliphant were able to get in making the movie. They traveled to India and began looking for ideal locations. It was during this time that their plan for The Silent Flute fell apart.  Years passed by and death of Lee occurred  before Coburn and Silliphant decided to revisit The Silent Flute which was completed later.

இமஞ்சூழ் மலையும் இருவிசும்பும் காற்றும் - Panguni Sravanam & Ekadasi 2025

 

இருவிசும்பு  விசும்பு" என்றால் "வானம், ஆகாயம், விண், அண்டம், மேகம், தேவலோகம், திசை, சன்னமான அழுகை"  என பல அர்த்தங்கள் உள்ளன.  இருவிசும்பு என்றால் இரண்டு வானம் என்பதல்ல. 

 

- இரு (வினைசொல்) =  அமர், தங்கு.  இரு (உரிச்சொல்) = இருண்ட; கரிய; பெரிய; இரண்டு.   "விசும்பு" என்பதன் பொருள் ஆங்கிலத்தில் "sky", "heavens", "cosmos", "universe" அல்லது "cloud" ஆகும்.   திருவள்ளுவர் வானத்தின், மழையின் பெருமை பற்றி இயம்புகையில் - 

விசும்பின் துளிவீழின் அல்லால் மற்றாங்கே

பசும்புல் தலைகாண்பு அரிது. 

வானத்திலிருந்து மழைத்துளி வீழா விடின்,  உலகத்தில் ஓரறிவுயிராகிய பசும்புல்லின் தலையையும் காண முடியாது  என உயிர்கள் துளிர்த்தற்கு மழை நீரின் இன்றியமையாமையை கூறுகின்றார்.  If clouds stop dropping raindrops, Even blades of grass will stop rising.

 

 

The Cosmos   is an alternative name for the universe or its nature or order. Usage of the word cosmos implies viewing the universe as a complex and orderly system or entity. 

The 1870 book Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology  mentions - Thales dogma that water is the origin of things, that is, that it is that out of which everything arises, and into which everything resolves itself, Thales may have followed Orphic cosmogonies, while, unlike them, he sought to establish the truth of the assertion. Hence, Aristotle, immediately after he has called him the originator of philosophy brings forward the reasons which Thales was believed to have adduced in confirmation of that assertion; for that no written development of it, or indeed any book by Thales, was extant, is proved by the expressions which Aristotle uses when he brings forward the doctrines and proofs of the Milesian.  Plato, describes the idea of the good, or the Godhead, as the ultimate purpose of all conditioned existence; sometimes cosmologically, as the ultimate operative cause; and has begun to develop the cosmological, as also the physico-theological proof for the being of God; but has referred both back to the idea of the Good, as the necessary presupposition to all other ideas, and the cognition of them. 

Physical Cosmology is the study of the observable universe's origin, its large-scale structures and dynamics, and the ultimate fate of the universe, including the laws of science that govern these areas.  It is investigated by scientists, including astronomers and physicists, as well as philosophers, such as metaphysicians, philosophers of physics, and philosophers of space and time. 

The cosmos is studied in cosmology – a broad discipline covering scientific, religious or philosophical aspects of the cosmos and its nature.  Dark energy is one of the most mysterious features of our universe – we don’t know what it is, but it controls how the universe is expanding, as well as its ultimate fate. Now, a study of millions of celestial objects has revealed that we may have been thinking about it all wrong, with potentially dramatic consequences for the cosmos.  For decades, physicists have agreed that the universe is expanding at a fixed rate of acceleration, a cosmological constant known as lambda that has been interpreted as the push of dark energy. But in April 2024, DESI’s measurements showed the first hints that the universe may actually be accelerating less quickly over time – making the cosmological constant not so constant. 

If our roughly 13 billion-year-old cosmos could be considered middle-aged, the researchers note, these new images captured around its 380,000th birthday represent a snapshot of the universe as a newborn. 

Moving away – at Thiruvallikkeni it was Punguni Thiruvonam ~ last thiruvonam – i.e., next one in Chithirai will be Brahmothsavam as also Panguni Krishnapaksha Ekadasi  and hence Sri Parthasarathi had periya mada veethi purappadu.  It was Sri Peyalwar’s moonram thiruvanthi in the goshti. 

இப்புவியில் இவ்வளவு பாவங்களை செய்யும் நாம் எங்கு சென்று உழல்வோம் ?  ~ அத்தகைய நரகத்தில் நம்மை காக்கவல்லன் எவன் ?? ஆழ்வார் பாடல்களிலே தமிழ் வார்த்தை சொல்லாடலும், மணமும் கமழும்.  தமிழ் தலைவன் என கொண்டாடப்படும் ஸ்ரீ பேயாழ்வார் தம் மூன்றாம் திருவந்தாதி தனிலே ~ 'அமம், துரகம் ' - என்னே ஒரு சொல்லாடல் !   

கிருஷ்ணாவதாரத்தில் தன்னை விழுங்கிக் கொல்லுமாறு கம்ஸனாலே ஏவப்பட்டு பெரியகுதிரை வடிவங்கொண்டு வந்த கேசியென்னும் அஸுரனை வாய்ப்பிளந்தொழித்த கண்ணபிரானே நரகத்தில் நின்றும் நம்மைக் காத்தருள்வனென்கிறார் பேயாழ்வார். 'அமஞ்சூழ்ந்து' – அமமாவது நோய், மலையும் விசும்பும் காற்றும் நோவுபடும்படாக, எனவே இவைற்றைத் திரஸ்கரித்து மேலாக விளங்குகின்ற குதிரை என்றதாம். 'துரகம்' – வடசொல், வேகமாகச் செல்வது என்று காரணக் குறி. இமஞ்சூழ் மலையும் இருவிசும்பும் காற்றும்,

அமஞ்சூழ்ந்து  அறவிளங்கித் தோன்றும், - நமஞ்சூழ்

நரகத்து தம்மை நணுகாமல் காப்பான்,

துரகத்தை வாய்பிளந்தான் தொட்டு. 

பனியாலே சூழப்பட்டிருக்கிற வெள்ளிப்பனி  இமயமலையையும், பெரிய ஆகாயத்தையும், வாயுவையும், அமம் சூழ்ந்து (பருமனாலும் உயர்த்தியாலும் வேகத்தாலும்) திரஸ்கரித்து, தெள்ளத்தெளிவாக விளங்கி  கண்ணெதிரே வந்து தோன்றின, குதிரைவடிவு கொண்டு வந்த கேசியென்னுமசுரனை, திருக்கையால் பற்றி - அந்த அரக்கன் தன்  வாயைக் கிழிந்துப்போட்ட பெருமான் ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன் , நம்மை, யமனைத் தலைவனாகக்கொண்ட நரகத்திலே புகவொட்டாமல் ரக்ஷித்தருள்வன் !

Sri Peyalwar guides that our protector is Sriman Narayana.  With his bare hands, He killed the mighty  Rakshas in disguise of horse  Kesi.  He who protected the mountains, the skies, the winds and all else within Himself will surely protect us from the travails at hell. 

Let us bow to Sriman Narayana and fall at His Lotus Feet, as guided by Azhwar. 

At Thiruvallkkeni divyadesam, today it was Saturday,  Panguni Krishnapaksha Ekadasi and Thiruvonam too.  Sri Parthasarathi had periya mada veethi purappadu.  Here are some photos of the purappadu with Perumal adorning kodali mudichu and mayirpeeli.
